Presbyopia is a condition where an individual has loss of both their near and distant vision at the same time.  This is what most people who are walking around with bifocals have, and, interestingly “presby” actually means “old person” in Greek.

It is thought that this condition is in part due to aging of the crystalline lens and the loss of range of movement in the muscles that support it.  The effects of the condition are much worse in low light as the focus depth of the eye is much deeper due to a wide open pupil.
